During the early 1900’s, Portland's rapid expansion shaped the character of our inner neighborhoods with many of these homes. A movement credited to Gustav Stickley, these Craftsman homes can be identified by a few of these recognizable features.
1) Low pitched gabled or hipped roofs.
2) Exposed rafters and decorative brackets under eves.
3) Front porch beneath extension of main roof.
4) Deeply overhanging eves.
5) Double hung windows.
6) Ornate hand crafted and decorative woodworking.
7) Boxed beam ceilings.
8) Tapered square columns supporting roof.
Recently these homes have grown in popularity and the competition for an ‘untouched’ craftsman in its original glory is great. Many have been remodeled and changed in the past, destroying the original charm. Craftsman lovers these days comb the antique shops and used house part stores for original materials to restore their beauty back to its full grandeur.
